A senior police officer on Friday said the gruesome incident took place when the woman and her husband, both residents of Lumding in Nagaon district of Assam, were coming to Silchar from Aizawl in a private car on Wednesday night. They were supposed to travel to Lumding from Silchar by train.
After leaving Bolpui in Mizoram, her husband said the driver, Jakir Hussain Majumdar (26), told him that the vehicle had developed a problem and asked him to get down and push it. As soon as he got off the car, Jakir sped away with the woman. The victim's husband ran after the car for quite sometime, but in vain. He later reached Silchar by taking other vehicle.
The victim's husband, who was in the 3rd Battalion of Mizoram Police, took voluntary retirement on April 1.
In the meantime, the driver allegedly raped the woman and took her belongings and dumped her near a travel agency in the Club Road locality of Silchar early on Thursday morning. Locals spotted her and informed the police. She was taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) where the doctors declared her brought-dead.
When he reached Silchar, he got the news and rushed to SMCH to identify the body. The husband has filed an FIR saying that all belongings, including cash and ornaments that were with his wife, were looted by the driver, who also raped her and then dumped her on the road.
Police have arrested Jakir, a resident of Berenga near Silchar. However, he has denied the charges saying that when he started the vehicle at Bolpui with the help of the victim's husband, the woman jumped off the car fearing that he was speeding away and got injured in the process. He claimed that he stopped the vehicle and rescued the woman and reached Silchar along with her husband. The police officer investigating the case said they are waiting for the autopsy report from SMCH before coming to any conclusion.
