PWD made fraudulent payments: CAG

Comptroller and Auditor General of India has indicted the Mizoram Public Works Department of making fraudulent payment to the tune of Rs 5.81 lakh against works which were not executed.

The report, laid in the state assembly recently, said the Chief Engineer, Buildings, PWD allotted 28 formation cutting works without call for tender and against the CPWD Manual.

The first package of the works at the estimated cost of Rs 68.29 lakh and the second package at the estimated cost of Rs 68.05 lakh were awarded to the Kolkata-based Tantia Construction company in 2008 without call for tenders and administrative approval, the report said.

The Kolkata-based firm was given undue favour and the works, for which a total amount of Rs 5.81 lakh was disbursed to the contractor, were not executed.

Among the works not executed are the subway below Vanapa Hall, Bungkawn YMA Road, Approach Road to Chief Secretary Bungalow and Approach road to circuit house, all of them in Aizawl.
