Minor earthquake jolts Mizoram-Bangladesh border region

An earthquake of slight intensity, measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale, shook the border region between the Indian state of Mizoram and Bangladesh this morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The quake, which had its epicentre at latitude 22.6°N and longitude 92.5°E, occurred at 0703 hours at a focal depth of 5 km, an IMD bulletin added.

Man arrested following death of wife in Mizoram

A 51-year-old man in Kolasib distraict on the Mizoram-Assam border was arrested after his wife died under mysterious circumstances, a police officer said today.

The officer said that Lalthangliana and his wife Lalsangluaii (37) were living in a roadside shop at Rengtelui near Kolasib.

"Lalthangliana called the relatives of his wife yesterday that he could not wake her up and would bring her to Kolasib by a cab," Police said, adding that, Lalsangluaii's relatives, suspecting foul play filed FIR in the Kolasib Police Station resulting in the arrest of the husband.

Kolasib Police Station Officer-in-Charge Vaninlawma said that detailed investigation was being launched.

Mizoram Liquor act

Silchar, Jan. 14 : The decks have been cleared for the implementation of the Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition and Control) Act, 2014, for allowing only those who would possess liquor cards, with an official announcement yesterday that the act will come into force on January 22.

This act, however, for the time being now will not be operative in the three autonomous district councils of Lai, Chakma and Mara areas.

The act seeks to replace the Mizoram Total Prohibition Act, enacted in 1995, bringing in a regime of near total prohibition in Mizoram.

Qureshi hopes to complete tenure

AIZAWL, Jan 13 – The new Governor of Mizoram, Dr Aziz Qureshi said that as far as his plan is concerned he would like to complete his tenure of Governorship in Mizoram unless his service is terminated by the Central Government. He also said that he will do his best for Mizoram.

Dr Qureshi was sworn in on Saturday as the 15th Mizoram Governor. In response to media query after the swearing-in ceremony, Dr Qureshi said that Mizoram is not a dustbin so he does not regard his appointment as State Governor a punishment. “I am determined to do my best for the development of Mizoram and for the people”, the new Governor said.

He appreciated Mizoram as a land of peace and tranquility besides being a beautiful place. He recalled that he had visited Mizoram back in the 1960s in connection with elections.

Award for Mizoram CM

AIZAWL, Dec 3 – The Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI) has conferred ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ to Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla at the North East India Congress on Church in Mission (NEICOCIM) Conference held at CBCNEI Mission Compound in Guwahati recently.

Expressing his gratitude to EFI for the award, Lal Thanhawla said he was happy over the acknowledgement given to his ‘little contribution’ for peace and harmony in Mizoram.

The Chief Minister lauded EFI for its missions for peace in the region. He mentioned that during the Kuki-Naga ethnic conflict in June 1992 and that of Dimasa-Hmar in April 2003, EFI leaders stepped out for peace and harmony after the government failed to stem the rot.

Fake notes with Rs 1.5 lakh face value seized

Fake Indian currency notes having a face value of Rs 1.5 lakh were seized from one person who was arrested during a joint operation by BSF and police at Gumrah bordering Meghalaya in the district today.

The joint team apprehended 24-year-old Nazmul Islam Laskar with notes of Rs 500 denomination having a total face value of Rs 1.5 lakh, a BSF official said.

The consignment had come from Bangladesh and was meant to be distributed in Gumrah, Kalain, Jalalpur and bordering villages, BSF spokesman and Deputy Inspector General, HQ BSF Mizoram and Cachar Frontier, Satish Budakoti, said.

Laskar, who used to work in coal mines in Meghalaya before getting involved in the fake currency racket, was handed over to the police, Budakoti said.

9,637 people HIV positive in Mizoram

AIZAWL, Dec 3 : At least 9,637 people in Mizoram have been found to be HIV-positive while 587 AIDS patients died in the State in the last 24 years, according to Mizoram State AIDS Control Society.

MSACS officials said that 2,97,375 blood samples have been tested since October 1990 till October this year.

The officials said that while the number of new infections decreased considerably, the change in the mode of transmission was disturbing.

“During the early years, intravenous drug users and sex workers were the high risk groups, but things have changed over the past years,” they said, adding that as of now, an alarming 68.85 per cent of HIV positives got infected through unprotected sexual intercourse.

Students staged demonstrations on the streets as the World AIDS Day was observed here with placards reading – “Getting to Zero - Zero Infection, Zero Discrimination & Zero Death”, the theme of the World AIDS Day 2014.

Shillong: Over 2300 people are infected with HIV that causes AIDS in Meghalaya and 460 new cases annually were detected, State Health Minister AL Hek said today.

The HIV prevalence is estimated at 2,381 infections which included adults as well as children and an estimation of 460 new cases of HIV infections in the age group of 15 years and above annually, Hek who addressed the World Aids Day celebration here said.

It is of paramount importance that new HIV infections be prevented and will require a decisive action guided by a ground breaking vision of Zero new HIV Infection, Zero discrimination, Zero AIDS related deaths. We believe that by taking the right decision we can achieve universal access to HIV prevention treatment, care and support, he said.

Earlier, Hek flagged off the Zindagi Zindabad Campaign to spread awareness on HIV/AIDS throughout the State and lighted a candle to mark the celebration of the World AIDS Day.
